The Asian Water Buffalo is a large, heavily built animal with stout legs and large, splayed hoofs. The skull is relatively light, long and narrow. Its muzzle is large and hairless. The ears are relatively small and not heavily haired. The Asian Water Buffalo's color is generally black or gray, with the lower legs being a dirty white, and there is often a narrow white "V" on the throat. The horns are heavy at the base, triangular in section, flat on top with conspicuous wrinkles, and grow out from the sides of the head.
